Western Aberdeenshire is home to some of Scotland’s most beautiful mountain scenery. It is unique in its close proximity to Aberdeen airport and train station.

Cairngorms National Park

The national park spans a large area of Scotland, the east of which is in Aberdeenshire. Aberdeen’s majestic rivers, the Don and the Dee are sourced in the Cairngorms and these riverside communities that offer fantastic outdoor scenery, spectacular castles and country estates. There is lots of accommodation on offer and communities welcome film crews.

Some key Munro mountains are found in Aberdeenshire. Lochnagar, a famous mountain that surrounds Loch Muick, on the Balmoral Estate and further north, Ben Macdui is one of the highest in the UK.

The Mar Lodge Estate is a sporting estate owned by the National Trust for Scotland. It has lots of accommodation to support larger productions wanting to film a classic Scottish mountainous landscapes. It has dramatic glens, pine forests, heather-covered moorlands and astonishing bird and animal life.

Near the City

Closer to central Aberdeenshire is Bennachie a majestic hill not far from the city. Many hills and mountainous landscapes have attracted film and documentary crews.

The Glen Tanar Estate, near Aboyne, on the edge of the Cairngorms offers forests, lochs and mountain views.

Alongside mountains come rivers: fishing spots and fabulous waterfalls such as the Dess Waterfall at Kincardine O’Neil.

Scotland we have lots of cairns (ancient burial grounds, or more modern ones erected by Queen Victoria at Balmoral. All part of the hillwalking landscape.
